What it is
Persistent regional pain disproportionate to an injury or operation, with sensory, vasomotor, sudomotor and motor changes. Early multidisciplinary recognition and care are important.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Burning pain and marked sensitivity
- Temperature, colour, sweating or swelling changes
- Stiffness, weakness and restricted limb use

Persistent Pain
When is medical reassessment needed?
New or progressive pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, fracture risk after trauma, neurological weakness, saddle numbness, bladder or bowel change, or loss of balance requires prompt or emergency assessment according to the symptoms.
