Chronic post-traumatic pain

What it is

Pain continuing after a fracture, dislocation, sprain, accident or soft-tissue injury after the acute phase. It may include nociceptive and neuropathic components.

Typical clinical symptoms

  • Persistent pain in the injured region
  • Stiffness, weakness or reduced load tolerance
  • Fear of movement or difficulty returning to activity

Persistent Pain

When is medical reassessment needed?

New or progressive pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, fracture risk after trauma, neurological weakness, saddle numbness, bladder or bowel change, or loss of balance requires prompt or emergency assessment according to the symptoms.
