Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury

What it is

Injury to the ligament limiting posterior tibial translation, often caused by a blow to the front of the shin with the knee bent or by hyperextension.

Typical clinical symptoms

  • Pain and swelling after trauma
  • Pain at the back of the knee
  • Difficulty descending stairs or decelerating
  • Instability in larger or combined injuries
