What it is
A collection of synovial fluid behind the knee, often secondary to an intra-articular condition such as osteoarthritis, inflammation or meniscal injury.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Fullness or a lump behind the knee
- Tightness and restricted bending
- Pain after activity or prolonged standing
- Calf swelling after rupture, which needs urgent differentiation from thrombosis

Knee
When does the knee need medical guidance?
Deformity after trauma, inability to bear weight, a fully locked knee, immediate major swelling, a hot red knee with fever, or a change in foot pulse, colour or sensation require prompt medical assessment.
