What it is
Degenerative change in cartilage and bone, often post-traumatic at the wrist or affecting the DIP, PIP and MCP joints of the hand.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain and stiffness aggravated by use
- Joint swelling or bony enlargement
- Reduced movement, grip and dexterity
- Crepitus, deformity or locking in some cases

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
