What it is
Narrowing of the passage through which a flexor tendon runs, usually at the A1 pulley, preventing smooth tendon gliding.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Clicking or catching while bending and straightening the finger
- The finger may lock in flexion and release suddenly
- Pain or a nodule at the palmar base of the finger
- Stiffness that is often worse in the morning

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
