What it is
Fracture of another carpal bone or a complex displacement around the lunate after high-energy trauma. Median nerve injury may occur and urgent assessment is required.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Marked wrist pain and swelling after trauma
- Severely restricted movement and grip
- Deformity or deep central wrist pain
- Median-distribution numbness or sudden hand weakness

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
