What it is
Fractures of the palm or finger bones after impact, crushing, a fall or twisting. Finger rotation and joint involvement influence clinical decisions.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Local pain, swelling and bruising
- Deformity, shortening or finger overlap when making a fist
- Pain with gripping or finger movement
- An open wound, sensory loss or poor circulation requires emergency care

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
