What it is
Avascular necrosis of the lunate caused by impaired blood supply, which may progress to bone collapse and wrist arthritis.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Deep central-dorsal wrist pain
- Swelling and stiffness
- Pain with loading or wrist extension
- Progressive reduction in grip strength

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
