What it is
Inflammation of one or more joints caused by rheumatological disease, crystals or infection. Septic arthritis requires urgent treatment.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Joint pain, warmth, swelling and restricted movement
- Prolonged morning stiffness and symmetrical involvement in some inflammatory diseases
- Sudden severe onset with gout or infection
- Redness, fever or a nearby wound requires prompt assessment

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
