What it is
A benign fluid-filled lump arising from a joint or tendon sheath, most commonly on the dorsal or palmar wrist.
Typical clinical symptoms
- A lump that may change in size
- Pain or discomfort with movement and weight-bearing
- Restricted movement when the cyst is large
- Numbness or weakness if it compresses a nerve

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
