What it is
A condition involving disproportionate pain and sensory, autonomic and motor changes after a fracture, operation or other injury. Diagnosis is clinical and other causes must be excluded.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Burning pain or marked sensitivity to light touch
- Swelling and changes in skin temperature or colour
- Sweating or changes in nails and hair
- Stiffness, weakness and limited use of the hand

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
