What it is
A traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head, neck or body; loss of consciousness is not required and the athlete should be removed from play for assessment.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Headache, dizziness, nausea or balance difficulty
- Light or noise sensitivity and visual disturbance
- Slowing, confusion, memory difficulty or mood change

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
