What it is
A stress reaction or defect of the lumbar pars interarticularis, more common in sports involving repeated extension and rotation.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Activity-related low-back pain
- Aggravation with extension, rotation or landing
- Stiffness and sometimes buttock or thigh pain

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
