What it is
Damage to articular cartilage, with or without underlying bone, after trauma or repeated loading.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Deep joint pain with loading
- Recurrent swelling after activity
- Catching or locking when a fragment is unstable

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
