What it is
A neck injury after contact, fall or diving with potential vertebral, ligament or spinal-cord involvement. Immobilisation and emergency care are required.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Severe neck pain after trauma
- Limb numbness, weakness or paralysis
- Breathing difficulty or loss of bladder/bowel control

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
