What it is
Bone, disc or joint infection may present as persistent pain and requires urgent medical assessment, laboratory tests and imaging when indicated.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Severe progressive pain, often also at rest
- Fever, chills or systemic illness
- A hot swollen joint or risk factors for infection

Persistent Pain
When is medical reassessment needed?
New or progressive pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, fracture risk after trauma, neurological weakness, saddle numbness, bladder or bowel change, or loss of balance requires prompt or emergency assessment according to the symptoms.
