What it is
Neuropathic pain that persists in the affected area after shingles, even once the rash and blisters have healed.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Burning or shooting pain in a band of skin
- Marked sensitivity to touch or clothing
- Numbness, itching or altered sensation

When is medical reassessment needed?
New or progressive pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, fracture risk after trauma, neurological weakness, saddle numbness, bladder or bowel change, or loss of balance requires prompt or emergency assessment according to the symptoms.
