What it is
Pain that develops or increases after surgery and persists beyond expected healing, after infection, mechanical complications and other causes have been considered.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain near the operated area or in a nerve distribution
- Scar sensitivity, numbness or burning
- Functional restriction persisting beyond the expected recovery phase

Persistent Pain
When is medical reassessment needed?
New or progressive pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, fracture risk after trauma, neurological weakness, saddle numbness, bladder or bowel change, or loss of balance requires prompt or emergency assessment according to the symptoms.
