What it is
Joint inflammation caused by rheumatological disease, crystal deposition (as in gout), or infection. Septic arthritis is a medical emergency.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Knee swelling, heat, pain and restricted movement
- Sudden severe onset in crystal or septic arthritis
- Redness and fever, especially with infection
- Other joints or prolonged morning stiffness in inflammatory disease

When does the knee need medical guidance?
Deformity after trauma, inability to bear weight, a fully locked knee, immediate major swelling, a hot red knee with fever, or a change in foot pulse, colour or sensation require prompt medical assessment.
