What it is
A slip through the growth plate of the femoral head in adolescents. Limping or inability to bear weight requires urgent orthopaedic assessment.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Hip, thigh or isolated knee pain
- Limping with the foot turned outward
- Restricted internal rotation or inability to walk

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
