Typical clinical symptoms
- Deep pain below the buttock
- Pain with prolonged sitting or forward bending
- Symptoms with sprinting, uphill running or hamstring exercise

Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
