What it is
A fracture of the femoral neck, intertrochanteric or subtrochanteric region, usually after a fall in older adults or high-energy trauma.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Severe hip or groin pain after trauma
- Inability to stand or bear weight
- The leg may appear shortened and externally rotated

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
