What it is
Lumbar-spine structures or nerve roots may cause buttock, groin or leg pain and mimic a local hip disorder.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain associated with lumbar movement or posture
- Radiating pain, numbness or tingling in the leg
- Weakness, reflex or sensory change when a nerve root is affected

Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
