What it is
Gradual cartilage degeneration and bone change in the joint between the femoral head and acetabulum. Imaging findings must be interpreted alongside symptoms and function.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain most often in the groin, but also in the thigh, buttock or knee
- Stiffness after rest and restricted rotation or flexion
- Difficulty walking, using stairs, putting on socks or rising from a chair

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
