What it is
A strain or tear of the hip flexors, adductors, gluteals or hamstrings after rapid force, stretching or sprinting.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Sudden pain during activity
- Weakness and pain with muscle contraction or stretch
- Bruising, swelling or difficulty walking in larger injuries

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
