What it is
A tear or irritation of the fibrocartilage ring around the acetabulum that contributes to joint stability. Some labral tears may be asymptomatic.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Groin or anterior-thigh pain
- Clicking, catching or locking with movement
- Pain with rotation, change of direction or prolonged sitting

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
