What it is
Pain may be felt in the elbow or forearm even when the source is the neck, shoulder, wrist or a nerve elsewhere along the limb. Examination should link the symptom pattern to its possible source.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain accompanied by neck or shoulder symptoms
- Numbness, tingling or weakness not matching a local structure
- Symptoms changing more with neck than elbow movement
- Persistent unexplained pain or systemic symptoms require medical assessment

When is medical coordination needed?
Deformity after trauma, immediate inability to move the arm, severe pain with a tense forearm, a cold or pulseless hand, progressive numbness or weakness, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
Descriptions are for orientation. Diagnosis follows history, clinical examination and, only when indicated, imaging or laboratory tests.
