What it is
A fracture of one or both forearm bones caused by direct trauma, a fall or a rotational mechanism. Bone alignment, the elbow and wrist joints, nerves and circulation must be assessed.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Severe pain and swelling along the forearm
- Deformity, shortening or abnormal position
- Pain and inability to rotate the forearm
- An open wound, numbness or circulatory change requires emergency care

When is medical coordination needed?
Deformity after trauma, immediate inability to move the arm, severe pain with a tense forearm, a cold or pulseless hand, progressive numbness or weakness, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
