Osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum

What it is

Injury to subchondral bone and cartilage at the capitellum, most often in adolescents exposed to repeated throwing or gymnastics loading. An unstable fragment may become a loose body.

Typical clinical symptoms

  • Lateral pain during throwing or upper-limb weight-bearing
  • Swelling and progressive loss of extension
  • Clicking, catching or locking
  • Reduced performance in a young athlete
