What it is
A load-related condition of the common forearm extensor tendon on the outside of the elbow, most often near the extensor carpi radialis brevis origin. “Epicondylitis” is commonly used, although the process is not necessarily inflammatory.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain or burning on the outside of the elbow
- Pain with gripping, lifting, shaking hands or turning a tool
- Pain with resisted wrist or middle-finger extension
- Pain-related reduction in grip strength

When is medical coordination needed?
Deformity after trauma, immediate inability to move the arm, severe pain with a tense forearm, a cold or pulseless hand, progressive numbness or weakness, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
