What it is
Overload or tearing of the triceps tendon where it attaches to the olecranon. Rupture may follow a fall, forceful pushing or sudden loading.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Posterior elbow pain with pushing or extension
- Tenderness at the tip of the olecranon
- Swelling, bruising or a pop with acute injury
- Weakness or inability to straighten the elbow against gravity with a complete rupture

When is medical coordination needed?
Deformity after trauma, immediate inability to move the arm, severe pain with a tense forearm, a cold or pulseless hand, progressive numbness or weakness, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
