What it is
A sprain of the plantar complex of the great-toe joint after forced hyperextension, often during sprinting on firm surfaces.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain and swelling at the great-toe base after trauma
- Pain with push-off and direction change
- Restricted movement or instability in larger injuries

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
