What it is
Compression of the tibial nerve or its branches behind the medial malleolus, producing sensory symptoms in the sole.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Burning, numbness or tingling in the sole and heel
- Symptoms aggravated by standing or walking
- Tenderness behind the medial malleolus and sometimes intrinsic-muscle weakness

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
