What it is
Injury to the ligaments connecting the tibia and fibula above the ankle joint. It often takes longer to recover than a lateral sprain.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain at the front or above the ankle
- Pain with leg rotation, walking or push-off
- Marked difficulty loading the leg, sometimes with little bruising

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
