What it is
Overload or fracture of the small bones beneath the great-toe joint that bear load during push-off.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain beneath the great-toe base
- Pain with running, jumping or toe walking
- Swelling or bruising, especially after trauma

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
