What it is
Thickening and irritation of an interdigital nerve, most often between the third and fourth metatarsals, from repeated compression.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Burning forefoot pain spreading into the toes
- Numbness or tingling in adjacent toes
- A pebble-in-the-shoe sensation aggravated by narrow footwear

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
