What it is
A load-related condition usually affecting the tendon 2–6 cm above the heel, with changes in tendon structure and capacity.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Achilles pain and stiffness, especially in the morning
- Pain at the start of or after running and jumping
- Mid-tendon thickening and tenderness

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
