What it is
A sprain, fracture or displacement at the tarsometatarsal complex of the midfoot. It may resemble a sprain but needs early recognition.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Midfoot pain and swelling
- Bruising on the sole of the foot
- Severe pain with weight-bearing or push-off

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
