What it is
A load-related disorder where the Achilles attaches to the calcaneus, sometimes accompanied by bony or bursal change.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain at the back of the heel
- Pain with firm shoes, uphill walking or heel raises
- Stiffness, thickening or tenderness at the insertion

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
