What it is
Joint inflammation from rheumatological disease, crystals or infection. Septic arthritis is a medical emergency.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Joint pain, warmth, redness and swelling
- Sudden severe onset with gout or infection
- Fever, a nearby wound or systemic illness requires urgent assessment

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
