What it is
Osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint that especially restricts great-toe extension during push-off.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain and stiffness at the great-toe base
- Pain with walking, running or heel raises
- A dorsal bony prominence and progressive loss of movement

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
