What it is
Bone stress injury when repeated load exceeds recovery, often affecting a metatarsal, navicular, calcaneus or distal tibia.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Gradual focal pain aggravated by activity
- Clear bony tenderness and sometimes swelling
- Pain progressing from sport to walking or rest

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
