What it is
A fracture at the base or shaft of the fifth metatarsal; a Jones fracture carries greater risk of delayed healing because of limited blood supply.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain and swelling on the outside of the foot
- Pain with walking or loading
- Bruising and focal bony tenderness

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
