What it is
Repeated episodes of the ankle giving way after sprains, associated with mechanical laxity and/or reduced neuromuscular control.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Giving way on uneven ground or during sport
- Recurrent ankle sprains
- Persistent pain, swelling or lack of confidence after the initial injury

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
