What it is
Progressive bone and joint damage in a neuropathic foot, most often associated with diabetes. A suddenly hot, swollen foot requires prompt assessment.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Swelling, warmth and redness, sometimes with less pain than expected
- Progressive change in foot shape
- An ulcer, fever or suspected infection requires urgent assessment

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
