What it is
A fracture of a major hindfoot bone, usually after a fall from height or high-energy trauma.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Marked heel or ankle pain and swelling
- Inability to bear weight
- Extensive bruising, deformity, numbness or an open wound requires emergency care

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
