What it is
A partial or complete tendon tear, usually during forceful push-off, sprinting or jumping. Prompt assessment is required.
Typical clinical symptoms
- A pop or feeling of being struck at the back of the leg
- Sudden pain and swelling
- Marked push-off weakness and difficulty performing a heel raise

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
