What it is
A postoperative clot in a deep vein may travel to the lungs. Suspected DVT or pulmonary embolism requires emergency assessment.
Typical clinical symptoms
- New one-sided calf or thigh swelling, pain or warmth
- Sudden breathlessness or chest pain
- Rapid heartbeat, dizziness or coughing blood

After Surgery
When should the medical team be contacted?
Fever or wound discharge, wound opening, new one-sided leg swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain, a cold limb, progressive weakness, deformity or sudden loss of function require immediate contact with the medical team or emergency services.
