What it is
A sprain or tear of the stabilising ligament at the thumb base, usually after forced deviation away from the palm. A displaced tear may form a Stener lesion.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain and swelling on the ulnar side of the thumb MCP joint
- Weak pinch or difficulty holding objects
- Thumb instability
- Bruising and pain after a fall or sports injury

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
